Gigs, Trailers, Oars....

01/03/2010

A quick update on what we are doing with boats and oars over the next few weeks.

Old Harry

Old Harry is back in the gig shed and many thanks to all those who helped move, wash and trailer the boats in the rain on Sunday morning. Don is painting the floorboards and the rudder will be finished next week. I need to secure the thwart supports and Jason from Signs and Images will  finish the lettering next week. Therefore we should have a usable Old Harry again by Saturday 6th March. Some comments about her treatment for the next season:-

1. Always use the stem and stern wedges when putting her away to maintain her slight curve of the keel (the rocker). This curve helps the boat turn faster at buoy turns. If we let her sag again by not securing the wedges properly it will stress the hull and reduce her performance.

2. The thwart(seat) supports must always be in place. Never use the boat with any not fitted correctly as again it will distort and weaken the boat.

3. There were some non stainless screws in place that had rusted and started rot in a three places on the boat. This is repaired and it is important that any repair uses marine grade fixings.

4. Wash her out after every session, final wash with a bucket of clean sea water and drain well. This helps reduce the risk of rot and will keep her weight down a bit.

5. The outrigger strut that runs across the boat behind the cox‘s seat is mended. Please do not sit on it otherwise it will break again and we risk damaging the planking.

5. Old Harry is an old boat now and will need constant attention to keep her up to standard. Please let me know of any damage, scratches etc asap so we can get it fixed.

Peveril

Peveril is now up in the barn at Worth for maintenance. She requires much less work than Old Harry and I will assess what needs to be done next week.

Dancing Ledge

Once both wooden gigs are back from the Scillies we will antifoul Dancing Ledge ready for mooring her up during the summer season.

Trailers

One trailer has been serviced and Steve will kindly take the other one for maintenance next week.

Oars

The Junior oars have been washed and cleaned ready for a coat of varnish - thanks to Andy S. Richard has offered to get these refurbished

The Ladies oars will be revarnished by Lynne and her team in March followed by the Mens oars under the guidance of Andy. Thanks to Steve for allowing use of his workshop.

The Blue and White Pez oars will be painted Pirate colours and passed on to the Pirates of Poole who will then return the all blue Pez oars to us.
