From pirate raids to a charity raft race and first aid training to carnival rows ....we keep busy at SSRC!

August 16, 2017

Arrrrrr me hearties, the Pirate festival returned to Swanage on the 2 and 3 July, raising (or stealing!) treasure for the Swanage Pier fundraiser. The SSRC banded together a piratey crew to help with treasure chest recovery and skirmish the redcoats....we took to challenge and raised the pirate flag!

On the 16 July a group of Coxwains and Junior coaching team members undertook a days basic first aid course with Kernow Training. The training was tailored to ensure we covered first aid scenarios that may be encountered on the sea and in/around gigs. We covered serious subjects but had a little fun too ...it's amazing what you can do with a triangle bandage! We all passed ...so our members, juniors and visitors can continue to enjoy rowing with the knowledge that key personnel are trained.

Some members of SSRC also supported the Swanage Freemasons compete in the Dorset Freemasonry Raft Race in Poole Park, which was to support and raise all important funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. SSRC members helped to design the raft and had a few practice runs before the event (yes, they are all quite competitive!). It was a little different from gig racing but fun was had by all ...and one rower left the event as soon as he could to get to Bridport to compete in the regatta there!

Every year SSRC organise the Carnival row as part of the Swanage Carnival programme. Non- rowers can form teams (with a max of 2 SSRC members per team)  to compete in fun races  - Mens, Ladies, Mixed ....well, when we say fun, some teams make the most of the practice weeks in the lead up to the main event!  Unfortunately it had to be re-scheduled due to torrential rain and high winds during carnival week ...whilst we train in all weather, we didn't think it was fair to make non-rowers take up that challenge too! Pictures and  results to follow soo. A big thanks to all our members who helped row, set-up on the day and especially to Annabelle who had to co-ordinate and organise the row and teams.
